Yes I realize that I just spoke about this book on Tuesday. What can I say? I’m a fast reader. I was very interested to see how this particular series featuring the Granger brothers would end so I bought the book on Tuesday and finished it the same night.

A Lover’s Vow follows the youngest Granger brother, Dalton, as he falls in love with Shana’s sister, Jules. For those who don’t remember, Shana married Jace in the first book, A Brother’s Honor. This complicated enemy-friend-lover relationship was almost in a way the secondary plot line as we  unraveled the mystery of who killed Sylvia Granger, the brothers’ mother.

Jules and Dalton, admittedly, won’t be one of my favorite Brenda Jackson couples. Dalton was almost standoffish and indifferent when it came to the sanctity of his brothers’ marriages. While he loved Shiloh and Shana, it seemed that he tried to put down their marriages almost every chance he got. He was constantly baffled as to what would make his two brothers settle down to the point where it got going. Granted, he had to deal with a lot growing up considering the secrets his mother made him keep. For that reason, I am willing to let up on him a bit. Jules was smart, a badass but she too had the same problem Dalton had. She was almost dismissive of Shana and her father’s relationship becuase in the beginning she couldn’t see herself in that situation, it was the furthest thing from her mind. In that aspect, I see why Dalton and Jules were ultimately best for each other.

In terms of Sylvia Granger’s death, we found out what really happened. As fans of this series knew all along, Sheppard did not kill his wife. Thanks to the great detective of Jules, we found out Sylvia’s true killer and Sheppard was ultimately released and cleared of all charges. I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed when it was all finally revealed. Disappointed not in the conspiracy theory but in who the killer was. It was not someone I suspected in the least and while normally that would please me to no end, it wasn’t even someone who was on our radar. A part of me wanted to be truly shocked by the killer as I suspected or hoped that it would be someone close to the family that they would have never suspected. I guess Jackson decided that the family had been rocked enough my scandal which is understandable. The saving grace was that I was definitely intrigued by the motive.

Overall it was a solid book. It had the makings of a Brenda Jackson romance that her fans, myself included, have all come to love appreciate and that is what made A Lover’s Vow above average for me.
