Read-A-Romance Month Interview Series: Lena Hart

August is Read-A-Romance Month and all month, we are celebrating this beloved genre. In this exclusive interview series, I am talking with some of my favorite romance authors.

Today we talk to Lena Hart; author of contemporary, suspense, and historical romances. She is the pen behind the gritty and uber sexy Queen Quartette series which I adore.

August is Read-A-Romance Month, why is writing (and reading) romance important to you?

I read and write romance to be moved and to move others. That is all.

When did you know you wanted to be an author?

I think it was some time in high school. Being a voracious reader at that time made me want to also write my own romances, with heroines that looked like me. But as much as I wanted to write, I was practical enough to know a degree in marketing (vs creative writing) made more financial sense. Yet in the end, I threw common sense out of the window, left corporate America, and pursued my dream. Moral of my story: just follow your heart.

Where do you find the inspiration for your stories?

In lots of places! They can spark from just seeing a photo of a character, or from stories I hear in the news, or simply having a conversation with my family that triggers the “what if…” part of my brain.

What is your favorite part about being an author?

Getting to know the main characters on a personal level is usually the most exciting part of starting a new story for me. But getting to “The End” is my all-time favorite. Don’t get me wrong. Sometimes, it’s hard to say goodbye. But there’s also something satisfying about knowing that the people that lived in my head for so long will finally have their story shared with others.

Do you have a special writing routine? Any must-haves before you start a project?

No, not really. Every book is so different (for me, anyway) and so are the characters and the process it takes to write their story. Some characters just come to me and spill their stories, others require a bit more attention—and arm twisting—to get the story out of them LOL.

You’ve written quite a few books over the years, do you have a favorite character? If so, who is it and why?

I do! Though I like to think all of my characters as my favs, David and Tena (from the Bedpost saga) have a special place in my heart. I don’t why, but those two just have a way of pulling me into their craziness. And of all my characters, they’re the easiest to write. I can’t even work on the next book in the City of Sin spinoff series without those two trying to take over, smh.

What book of yours do you think would serve as the perfect introduction to someone who may be unfamiliar with your work?

Oh, that’s a tough one. I think with every book I grow stronger as a writer and because I write in different subgenres, it really depends on the person’s preference… I would say for contemporary romance fans, start with BECAUSE THIS IS FOREVER. For romantic suspense fans, I would suggest HIS BEDPOST QUEEN and for historical romance readers, check out A SWEET SURRENDER.

Rapid Fire Questions:

Favorite romance novel: Beyond Eden by Catherine Coulter

Favorite romance author: Linda Howard

Favorite TV show: Anything on ID (Investigation Discovery)

Favorite movie: The Mummy (with Brendan Fraser & Rachel Weisz)

Which one of your books would you like to see on the big screen? THE DEVIL’S BEDPOST

Side note: No fair, LOL! This portion was hard because I have too many favorites to choose. But rapid fire questions deserve rapid fire responses, so I didn’t bog down the post with my long list of favorites. Not this time, anyway… 😉
