Author Spotlight: Brenda Jackson
August is Read A Romance Month! In celebration of my favorite genre, I am highlighting some of my favorite romance authors.
Brenda Jackson is what I call an OG in the romance game. She’s the reason I really fell in love with books, romance more specifically. She has written over 100 books and continues to put out quality work. Jackson has evolved with her readers yet still manages to give this younger generation contemporary romances they can relate to. One of the things I love about her books is that they never feel dated. I am a huge fan of her Madaris series and the first one in that series was written in the 90s. Yet, whenever I pick up a book the time difference isn’t noticeable. There’s a certain flair that Jackson brings to her work that can never be denied and because of that, 20 years later she is still topping the charts and gaining new fans.
If there was a Brenda Jackson fan club in my city, I would attend monthly meetings. I fell in love with her work at an age when I had no business reading her books. Years later, I’m still a fan and she takes up about two rows on my bookshelves and I constantly pre-order her books.
Jackson blazed the trail for a lot of African-American romance authors while putting out work that fans have grown to love. Among many things, she was the first African-American author to have a novel published as a part of the Silhouette Desire line by Harlequin. She is an example that you can have quality and quantity.
It is hard to recommend just one Jackson novel but if I am absolutely had to, it would probably be a tie between Surrender and The Midnight Hour. In case you’ve been living under a rock, dive right in and read these novels.
