The Must Watch Films for Fall

The fall season consistently brings us some of the best films of the year, if for no other reason than Oscar contention. Aside from the Oscar contenders, there are a lot of films to be excited about this season! From The Birth of a Nation to Fences, here are the must-watch films for fall:

the must watch films for fall

Sully – September 9th

Sully has already hit theaters but it’s one I’m planning to watch next weekend. This film stars Tom Hanks as Captain Chesley Sullenberger in the dramatization of the “Miracle on the Hudson” and its aftermath. I am a little surprised that it’s had such a quiet release, I was sure this would premiere closer to November but in either case I don’t like to pass up Tom Hanks films so I’ll be watching.

The Magnificent Seven – September 23rd

Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua team up again in The Magnificent Seven. With an all-star cast, this American western looks very promising.

The Birth of a Nation – October 7th

The Birth of a Nation has had plenty of Oscar buzz since it’s premiere at the Sudance Festival and subsequent $17.5 million purchase. It is a story that needs to be told and I am confident that it will be told quite well with this Nate Parker film. If I watch no other film for the rest of the year, I must watch The Birth of a Nation.

The Girl on the Train – October 7th

I must confess that I still haven’t finished the novel although I know exactly how it ends. I’m not sure what it is that is stopping me from reading it all the way through. I am telling myself that I will finish before October 7th so that I may watch the film but we all know that won’t stop me from parking my butt in the theater that weekend.

Moonlight – October 21st

I only saw the trailer for Moonlight last week and was immediately hooked. This films is a coming of age story for a young man in Miami in the 1980s. I spot Naomie Harris and Mahershala Ali in this trailer so I’m game. According to various reports, it’s one of the buzzier films this season. .

Doctor Strange – November 4th

It’s Marvel, I am a Marvel stan so for no other reason Doctor Strange will be on this list. Well, that and the fact that Chiwetel Ejiofor is also in this film.

Almost Christmas – November 11th

This movie looks like it will be hilarious, and I’m always down for a solid Christmas comedy.

Fences- December 16th

It’s Viola Davis and Denzel Washington in the screen adaptation of the Broadway play, reprising their roles. With this also being Washington’s third time in the director’s chairs (after my favorites Antwone Fisher and The Great Debaters), This is must watch film for sure!
